What are pessaries

Pessaries are medical devices used to support the pelvic organs, often employed in the treatment of various gynecological and urological conditions. Typically made from materials such as silicone, rubber, or plastic, pessaries come in a variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate different needs. Their primary function is to provide support to the pelvic floor, which can help manage conditions like pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, and uterine prolapse. By physically supporting the organs, pessaries can alleviate discomfort and improve the quality of life for those affected.

In cases of pelvic organ prolapse, a condition where pelvic organs such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum drop from their normal position due to weakened pelvic muscles, pessaries can be especially beneficial. The device helps to hold these organs in place, reducing symptoms such as bulging, pressure, and discomfort. There are several types of pessaries designed specifically for different types of prolapse, including ring pessaries, which provide support around the vaginal walls, and doughnut-shaped pessaries, which offer a broader area of support.

Pessaries are also used in managing urinary incontinence, particularly stress incontinence, where physical activity, sneezing, or coughing leads to involuntary leakage of urine. By supporting the urethra and improving its closure, a pessary can help reduce these involuntary leaks. Patients who experience mild to moderate symptoms may benefit from this non-surgical intervention, which can be a good alternative or complementary option to other treatments such as pelvic floor exercises or medication.

Using a pessary requires regular follow-up with a healthcare provider to ensure proper fit and hygiene. Patients are typically taught how to insert, remove, and clean their pessary at home. With appropriate use and care, pessaries can be an effective and non-invasive solution for managing pelvic floor disorders, offering significant relief and improving daily functioning for many individuals.

P.O.P.S. RULER
ACCESSORIES

The POP-Q score is the main clinical tool used to identify the severity of pelvic organ prolapse, and the anatomical success of conservative therapy and surgery. To date, there has been no easy-to-use measuring device with which to perform POP-Q scores.

Currently many gynecologists make-do using swabs, pap smear sticks, fingers or pipelles etc. to measure POP-Q values, making measurements imprecise and rather cumbersome. The POPs ruler has been designed to offer a more specific, precise and hygienic measuring tool.

POPs ruler offers the following benefits:

  • consistent results
  • easy-to-use
  • cost effectiveness
  • hygienical
  • usable in clinic and research setting
  • made of recyclable material

The P.O.P.s. ruler is available in packages of 20 pieces.
