What Are Pessaries?

Women’s pessaries are a commonly used medical device designed to support and manage various gynaecological conditions, particularly pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. In the case of ProFem these small, removable devices are made from medical grade silicone A Pessary is inserted into the vagina to provide support for the pelvic organs, helping to alleviate symptoms such as bulging, discomfort, and urinary leakage.

Pessaries come in various shapes and sizes to accommodate different anatomical needs and can be tailored to a woman’s specific condition and needs. Your healthcare provider will determine the correct type and size that you need. A healthcare provider is needed for proper fitting, adjustment, and maintenance of the pessary to ensure its effectiveness and comfort. While they offer a non-surgical option for managing pelvic health issues, they do require proper use and hygiene to prevent complications.

Types of Pessaries

Different types of pessaries have proved successful in treating vaginal prolapse and Stres Urinary Incontinence (SUI). With the ProFem® pessaries Sayco offers a unique range of pessary types and sizes to suit the individual, Including extra middle tange ring sizes.

Pessaries come in various shapes and designs, each tailored to address specific pelvic floor conditions and individual needs. One common type is the ring pessary, which features a simple, circular shape and provides support by maintaining the pelvic organs in their proper position. Ring pessaries are often used for mild to moderate pelvic organ prolapse and are available in different sizes to ensure a comfortable fit. Another variant is the donut or Cube pessary, which has a larger surface area and is particularly useful for more advanced prolapse cases. This type helps distribute pressure more evenly and can be adjusted for a better fit, enhancing comfort and effectiveness.

For cases requiring more specialized support, there are also Gellhorn pessaries, which are typically used for severe pelvic organ prolapse or uterine prolapse. The Gellhorn pessary has a larger, flat base with a central protrusion, which offers substantial support and keeps the prolapsed organs from bulging into the vaginal canal. Additionally, there are Cube pessaries, that work as a space pessary and Ideally should be used by a patient practising self care. Each type of pessary is chosen based on the patient’s specific condition, anatomical requirements, and comfort preferences, and a healthcare provider can guide the selection and fitting process to ensure optimal outcomes.
